Iranian Association of Certified Translators and Interpreters (IACTI)

Recognition of the official translation in the Iranian legislation dates back to 1930s, when the Iranian Parliament passed the first law on translation of official documents and court interpretation in June 1937.

It took fifty years for the growing community of the certified (official) translators to gather at a hotel in Tehran to lay the foundation for their first independent professional association, i.e., The Iranian Association of Certified Translators (IACTI), on November 7, 1985.

However, due to the lengthy and complicated administrative procedures it was not until March 1988 when the Iranian regulatory authorities formally approved the activity of IACTI. Yet, one year later, owing to some amendments introduced to the relevant laws, the authorities required the IACTI to apply to the Ministry of the Interior again for a permit which proved to be a drawn-out procedure.

During its short-lived first phase of activity, IACTI managed to elect a Board of Directors, draw up its Articles of Association and exchange certain correspondence with the concerned authorities.

After a long span of 10 years, the IACTI finally succeeded in obtaining a formal permit in November 2000, marking the beginning of its new phase of activity under its revised Articles of Association with the mission to coordinate the certified translators’ affairs, promote the quality of the profession, consolidate the ties among its members and safeguard the rights and interests of the certified translators.

IACTI has regularly held annual general meetings since then. It has a Board of Directors of seven members and one Auditor. Further, it has published three issues of its periodic newsletter so far.

It is worth noting that the Judiciary of I.R. Iran administers a certification examination and arranges an interview to assess the professional qualifications of prospective certified translators for rendering official and legal translation and court interpretation. Upon passing the examinations, each candidate may start their profession as a certified translator after taking part in a swearing-in ceremony and being awarded a certified translator's license.
